Who says participatory democracy can’t be fun?!?
In the space of just over two weeks, members of Hudson Civic Action met with the senior staff of Senators Booker and Menendez, and had an in-person meeting with our NJ:08 Representative, Congressman Albio Sires.
For Rep. Sires, we were scheduled for a half-hour meeting, and the Congressman very generously shared an hour and a half out of his busy schedule. Our primary ask for Rep. Sires was to have a Town Hall in the April recess, and to take a stand against Hudson County’s 287(g) agreement with ICE.
All in attendance felt very positive about the meeting. Initially, Rep. Sires responded to our request for a Town Hall with “Absolutely not”. By the end of the meeting, his position had moved to “I’ll think about it, and will decide within the week”.
We all felt very inspired and empowered by our participation in the democratic process, and look forward to further opportunities to engage with our elected officials across Hudson County!
